Blue Iceberg Launches Eakins Press Foundation Website

October 2012 - Blue Iceberg has launched a new e-commerce website for the Eakins Press Foundation, a not-for-profit educational and charitable private operating foundation, organized for the advancement of literature and art through excellence of presentation to a broad public. The new website is a showcase for Eakins Press publications.

The Foundation’s program supports and encourages the craftsmanship and art of authors, artists, painters and photographers, both unknown and of established reputation, whose efforts are non-commercial or commercially unfeasible. The Foundation issues works of the past and present that forward or are relevant to the vision, integrity and teaching of Thomas Eakins, the American painter for whom the Foundation is named. Publications include little known or neglected masterpieces of the American past having contemporary pertinence, and classic and contemporary works that would otherwise not have been published, or not with the quality of presentation the work deserves.

The new website features Eakins Press books in a visually rich presentation evocative of the fine printing and design heritage of the Press.  Blue Iceberg collaborated on the design with preeminent book designer Howard Gralla. The launch was timed to coincide with the publication of <i>Magicians & Charlatans</i> by Jed Perl.  In this collection of 26 essays, Mr. Perl writes with great urgency about the art scene of the past decade. The poet John Ashbery has said that “For years Jed Perl has been covering the art world with tremendous empathy and unsparing accuracy. His ability to recognize the traditional forms of art behind their continual transmutation has made his an almost solitary, essential voice.” The essays range from highly controversial critiques of the painter Gerhard Richter, the art dealer Leo Castelli, and the Museum of Modern Art, to appreciations of the art of Bernini and Chardin, and the writings of Edmund Wilson and Meyer Schapiro.
